Hey Nerd faithful!! Did you catch everything that’s been released this week? CW hosted an excellent teaser show for a bunch of DC properties. We received more Batman v, Superman info for some inexplicable reason. (I say that because we basically got the entire movie in that last trailer so why show anymore) More importantly, Wonder Woman!! We finally get to see her do more than just silently jump into the end of a trailer (Again, I’m looking at you BvS) Check out the new trailers and images, and other goodies you may have missed…
Wonder Woman
WW gets top billing in our Rundown this week because she’s been neglected so long. It’s great to see her actually speak and we can kind of get a feel for her universe. It’s not much, but it’s certainly more than we’ve received before. Chris Pine playing Steven Trevor could be really good and setting it in World War II really makes my heart sing. Hopefully, this won’t be a rush job and they will spend some time crafting a solid story. The screenshots looked a bit dark, but it fits the visuals many other directors have used when tackling the World War time period. Only time will tell so keep it on your radar!!
Shots Fired!!
NBC threw a jab at Netflix by “releasing” their viewership numbers, which at last check, I’m not sure NBC would accurately know that anyway. Netflix responds to NBC’s weak attack on their ratings in their 4th quarter shareholder letter, by releasing how many hours were watched on the service (42.5 billion, holy mackerel!) and this rather pointed statement below:
“The growth of Netflix has created some anxiety among TV networks and calls to be fearful. Or, at the other extreme, an NBC executive recently said Internet TV is overblown and that linear TV is “TV like God intended.” Our investors are not as sure of God’s intentions for TV, and instead think that Internet TV is a fundamentally better entertainment experience that will gain share for many years“
Bam!! It’s only going to get more heated as people jump ship from the sinking TV model to streaming services. Expect to see more jabs and potential negotiation issues between NBC and Netflix if the stats become a point of contention.
Justice League
In addition to all the trailers and new clips from the CW special, we were able to see some concept art for the new Justice League movie. However, a couple of classic JL members were absent from the concept art: Martian Manhunter and Green Lantern. We’ve heard conflicting reports that they will be in the movie, in different capacities until part 2 or they just haven’t been cast yet. Either way, it would be an odd film to have them missing from and we hope that we just haven’t seen their inclusion yet.
Suicide Squad
So, I will admit I was pretty negative of any information coming from this film. Like Joker’s remake…or Joker’s remake…or Joker’s remake…But honestly, I got over it and it’s really not that bad. The most recent trailer builds on the success of the last one and we get to see the character of the film starting to shine through. I may feel lukewarm to down right sick about BvS, but Suicide Squad has me pretty excited.
Batman v. Superman
Surprisingly, they didn’t reveal much more than the previous trailer did. There’s just a few extended shots and it’s probably for the best we didn’t get any more screen time. I’m truly convinced we have seen most of this film in the trailers and that’s not a good thing because I’m not impressed. And even if the “really is Doomsday, maybe not Doomsday, but I don’t really believe it” isn’t the only villain or threat to Bats, Supes, and WW, why are there so many in this film then? Doesn’t make much sense
Netflix 2016 Calendar
Curious what’s coming up on Netflix the next 6 months? We got the release dates for you right here!!
Love (Feb 11th)
Created by Judd Apatow, Paul Rust, and Lesley Arfin, starring Rust and Gillian Jacobs (Britta from Community) has promised to give a more down to earth look at relationships. There may be something to this series as it’s already been picked up for another 10 episode season.
Fuller House (Feb 26th)
I’m not looking forward to this at all. In the same way we didn’t need a Boy Meets World remake, we surely didn’t need this. It’s most likely going to be a disappointing show, and hopefully I will be wrong. It just seems like another money grab to cater to our insatiable desire for remakes and rehashes of old content.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword Of Destiny(Feb 26th)
Oh snap!! While I hope Fuller House will be better than my piss poor expectations, Crouching Tiger has the potential to be a Netflix movie knockout. China will be getting the film a week early and US viewers can expect it one week later. This was going to be simulcast between regular theaters and Netflix until most major chains refused. I get the logic, but honestly, I don’t mind paying for the theater experience. But I also think some films wouldn’t benefit from it, such as comedies or dramas that I could just stay at home and watch. This was silently one of the first casualties of the Netflix / Movie Theater war.
House Of Cards (March 4th)
When we left off, Claire was leaving…literally walking out on Francis at his most critical juncture on the road to re-election. While the entire 3rd season felt very odd compared the thrill rides of 1 and 2, it was a setup for what is sure to be a very electric 4th season. So many questions were raised, but we won’t have to wait long to figure them out.
Flaked (March 11)
It’s Will Arnett teaming up with Arrested Development creator and producer Mitch Hurwitz. What else do you need to know? Oh, you want more, well…..Arnett is playing a lying self-help guru whose lies are finally starting to catch up with him. It will be interesting to see Arnett carry a series himself, so keep an eye out on this one.
The Ranch (April 1)
I have no idea what Ashton Kutcher is up to by bringing in old That 70’s Show alumni Danny Masterson, along with Elisha Cuthbart (Happy Endings), the immaculate Sam Elliott (If it’s actually on a ranch, then this one makes sense), and Debra Winger.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (April 15th)
Tiny Fey’s brand of humor lives and breathes better on Netflix. The results show in how amazing this show was. It showcased a great case and made great use of Ellie Kemper. Expect the same brand of comedy that had me in tears for most of the first season.
Marseille (May 5)
Touted as the first original French production on Netflix, Marseille will feature acclaimed French actor Gerald Depardieu playing the mayor of Marseille who is face to face with his former protege in the next election.
Grace and Frankie (May 6)
Fonda and Tomlin are back continuing the lives of Grace and Frankie through more moments in their post marriage, odd couple friendship.
Orange Is the New Black (June 17)
The gangs all here…or we will see because the major shakeup at the end of season 3 has to be resolved. Things are sure to get a little wild seeing as whole new crop of prisoners being brought in is sure to cause a strain on the remaining inmates. Not to mention, Piper is nearing the end of her sentence with only a few more months remaining. There has to be a wrap up coming to the series soon; don’t be surprised if those threads start now.
Stranger Things (July 15)
A mystery thriller set in New York during the 80’s follows a young boy who disappears into thin air. Starring Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Matthew Modine, this will one of the shorter Netflix series only clocking in at 8 1 hour episodes.
The Get Down (Aug. 12)
It’s a musical set in New York during the late 70’s created by Baz Luhrmann of Moulin Rouge and The Great Gatsby fame. It looks like it follows in his tradition of high glamour sets and locales with great musical numbers. With the exception of Giancarlo Esposito and Jaden Smith, you will not recognize most of the leads for this series and that’s okay. Let’s see what the new kids can do…
Finally, I’ll leave you with this, a dash of funny for the week…
