Late-night TV hosts, having felt the brunt of the coronavirus in their last few weeks on air, have already moved the majority of their studio production to their homes. They’ve done so enlisting as little local help as they can, or in the case of Samantha Bee, her husband and children to run the teleprompter, camera, graphics, you name it.
While many of them have gone to doing interviews over Skype, Hangouts, etc to bring familiar faces to the screen, they are still focused on giving the world coronavirus updates during this time, of which we have plenty. Not condemning them for doing so; sometimes the satire of late night comedy can provide a better scope of what’s going than our major news networks. However, this still keeps the crisis in front of your face and doesn’t really allow you to escape.
Enter John Krasinski
Krasinski started a fun, uplifting idea to focus on the positive news through all the chaos, asking his Twitter followers to share their positive stories, or to share “Some Good News”. That evolved into his new series on YouTube, where he recounts the good news along with providing fun interviews. The standout and impactful moment of the show was his second interview with Courtney Johnson, who had recently recovered from chemotherapy and shared how her town celebrated her return home. If this was the feel good moment that Krasinski wanted people to experience and share in, he could have something very special developing here.
Circling back, his first interview included Steve Carrell, as they recounted their Office days. Definitely a fun back and forth between these former cast members, and any Office fanatic will enjoy seeing these two chat once more. If this series continues, don’t be surprised to see more of his past co-workers from Dunder Mifflin, or possibly from his recent shows, like his Jack Ryan co-star Wendell Pierce (Pierce’s London theater revival of Death of a Salesman just go nominated for 5 Olivier awards, not too shabby). Or maybe give us some hints about A Quiet Place: Part 2 and whether it will go straight to streaming or get pushed back for theatrical release.
Either way, Krasinski was non-committal whether this show would continue, but hopefully he’ll re-evaluate that after seeing his first entry got 3.2 million views…and counting.
