Inspired by SyFy’s re-release of the series on their website, Tricia Helfer’s (Caprica Six) new podcast, and Sam Esmail’s revival on NBC coming out later this year (or possibly in 2021 with all these production delays) we here at Nerd Union want to tackle one of the shows we’ve passionately loved, defended, and at moments hated on since it’s beginning. Check out the details below on how to watch and follow along with our 2020 Battlestar Galactica rewatch.
Weekly Content
- Weekly Premier
- This will tell you everything you need to know before starting the week’s episodes. This could be cool production notes for a particular scene, social context to think about before going into that week’s episode, or occasionally some blink and you’ll miss them easter eggs.
- Even though Galactica was a cable network show, we’ll give you content warnings as needed for particular episodes.
- Episode Recaps (Articles & Videos)
- This will walk you back through the weekly episodes, help you digest everything that happened, and give any relevant context you may have missed or should dive into now that you’ve seen the episode.
- AMA (Ask Me Anything) Sessions Every Monday Night
- Join us on Discord and Google Hangouts every Monday at 7PM Central to discuss the previous week’s episodes.
- Example: For the week of April 6th, we will watch the mini-series and Season One Episodes 1-2 this week. We will do our AMA on April 13th to discuss those.
- Weekly Trivia Contest
- Each week we’ll be posting a trivia question based on the content or episodes we’re covering that week. Answer correctly and you could win some pretty sweet BSG gear!!
Monthly Content
- Season Recaps
- We’ll look back and highlight the best moments of the season and dissect any key moments you should remember before going into the next season.
- Watch Parties
- We’ll pick a few key episodes and let you know when we’re watching those so you can join along. Expect the season and series finale episodes to be watch parties along with a few other great episodes.
- Behind The Scenes
- We will be working diligently to pull together every relevant interview or piece of information to help you enjoy the experience even more. This will include recent panel moments with cast and crew, previous interview way back when it started, and commentary on the tech and philosophy of the series.
- This will also give you context on how people felt about the series when it aired and how the original Battlestar community felt about the re-imagined series (Hint: it didn’t start off too hot)
- Updates on the new NBC series
- As we get information on Sam Esmail’s new Galactica series, we’ll give you as many updates and tidbits as we can
The “Tigh” Maneuver
Colonel Saul Tigh : “I’ll tell you the secret to avoid hangovers. Don’t stop drinking.“
We can’t condone this as a hangover cure, but we think it works well for watching the series. The “Tigh” Maneuver plan will help you get through the series by watching on average 2-3 episodes a week.
The “SyFy” Maneuver
Because we’re a small team of writers, we can’t commit to putting out content on this schedule. For our sanity, we’ll be sticking to the “Tigh” schedule for all releases. However, as we catch up to this schedule, you’ll be more than ready to participate in all of our AMAs and other pop-up live sessions.
Ultimately, pick whichever schedule works best for you or tailor it however you see fit. If you need to knock out a few extra episodes one week cause you don’t have time the next, go for it. This should be a super fun experience, not one that stresses you out.
Where To Watch
Free Option: NBC or SyFy channel apps or websites (Available until 7/31/2020)
They are effectively the exact same UI, just different skins for whichever site you pick. Be warned, the episodes start backwards, so be intentional to pick the correct season and scroll to find the first episode. Once you start watching, it seems to pick the next episode correctly, but a few users have noticed some issues. There are commercials that play throughout this free option.
Paid Options: Media service of choice (Google Play, Apple, Amazon, YouTube, etc) or buying the DVD/Blu rays
Buying each episode or season on a streaming service like the ones listed above could be a bit pricey. We’d recommend either watching what you can on SyFy until 7/31/2020 and then buying whatever else you need.
Additionally, buying the DVDs / Blu rays aren’t terribly expensive on either Ebay or Amazon for example so you could save a considerable amount of money getting them there.
