Content Warning: “The Farm” episode features a concept straight out of The Handmaiden’s Tale, taking over women’s reproductive autonomy as Caprica’s Cylon forces effectively run a pregnancy lab to engineer a cylon-human hybrid.
The Farm
The fleet story meshes pretty well into the Home two-parter, but Starbuck’s story with the resistance here is complicated to say the least. After watching, I would definitely love to hear your thoughts and comments in our Discord channel.
Cool story about this freezer scene…it was ridiculously hard to find a suitable location. Ronald Moore wanted it to occur in an actual meat locker as one of the final place in the fleet that had real meat, but Vancouver locations proved difficult to shoot in (either too small or too cold) and they had to settle for a built set to convey that idea.
If you think about walk-in refrigeration, it’s designed for things to be taken in quickly and store many things, but still needs to be as small as possible and make the refrigeration piece easier. To shoot in one would have been a difficult experience with the filming equipment and managing the shot, probably not surprising that they couldn’t find the right spot.
Home (Part 1 & 2)
Roslin is usually way ahead of Adama and here she is again, doing something that he’ll come to realize some time later (e.g. getting his head out of his ass). This happens in the mini-series when she makes her case about babies/survival and that’s what she’s been doing since the season one finale until this two-part episode.
Despite this episode structure (it’s the first one that David Eick mostly wrote on his own), there’s not a ton of plot points that occur in the first half, most of that happens in part two and this moment has been called, a conversation heavy one for multiple reasons. But it’s an important pause for the series to take before season two really ramps up with the midway point. In hindsight, these two episodes look even better given the season’s arc and structure.
